My Red Hutch (chalk paint DIY)
So, I knew nothing about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint! Do you?! I am seriously thankful for my brilliant DIY-er friends in my life --- esp. Andrea & Cyndi! They led me straight to this life changing line...
Things I love about Annie Sloan Chalk Paint:
- no sanding
- no priming
- just need a purdy brush & wiped down piece
Let's back up even further. I have another amazing designer friend, Bente from, Bente James Designs who knew I was moving & started scouring Craigslist & thrift shops to find me pieces for my new house. She sent this to me & said, "PAINT IT RED!" It was all her idea... wow.
I went & saw it & risked paying the guy most of it to save it. $150 for the whole thing. OMGosh. Serious. By the way, she'll find you amazing pieces too. Whatever you're looking for!
We moved it, twice. My hubs was out of town & I convinced my father-in-law & brother-in-law to go get it (THANK YOU, AGAIN!). Then a week later we moved it to our new home. This obviously didn't go over well, but come on, I'm glad I pushed it through! We got it moved into our new house & here's another amazing feature of chalk paint ~ It was a blizzard outside & I had them bring the piece right into the kitchen & I painted it right there.
Watch...
After you paint... you can go several ways. Distress it? Do a modern finish? You can research & see the main big ways you can go with Annie Sloan chalk paint. It is very matte & needs a finished touch on it, so the last thing you do is wax it. There is clear wax & dark wax.
I did the most simple DIY. This is 2-3 coats of the red, & then clear wax. I didn't distress the piece. I didn't even know what I was doing & it didn't matter. Think shoe wax. Way easy!
This is the most forgiving method of flipping a piece of furniture!! It's that simple. I also wasn't sure about spending the $39.00 for the big brush, but the guy at a local design store suggested that others try not to buy it, then come back for it. I bit the bullet, got the brush & have been SO happy. Just get it.
Ok, here, it's coming along. What!??!?! WOW!
Here's a peek at my Grammie's pieces inside. It lends itself to it's own post. A tour through my china cabinet. ..
(Random Side note: You'll walk around your house & find other things to paint. Below, is a pic of our night stands, that was a vanity I got for $30 & took apart.)
Back to the china cabinet...
Tada!!! [ignore Roomba, cords & the trash can.]
I will share more pics & pieces soon... like our 1950's dresser that I found in my father in law's basement. I hope this motivates you to glam up something awesome!
